Ocean Beach People's Food Cooperative
An institution for over two decades in the San Diego community of Ocean Beach, The People's Co-op has a new 12,500 square foot, member owned community and neighborhood store and organic food grocery. Through extensive cooperation between the architects, staff, co-op members, and city planning boards, architectural firm Hanna Gabriel Wells succeeded in designing an up-to-date, sustainable, environmentally responsible green building which serves as a regional model of conscious construction. Goals for the project evolved from the idea of creating a healthy and spiritually positive environment for the people who work and shop there and for the community at large. The architecture was organized around the idea of creating a great open Market Hall filled with natural light and surrounded by spaces sharing in community of that main space. Building design incorporates low energy consumption, high efficiency equipment, new and used recycled materials, strong use of natural daylight and ventilation, open work environment, solar electricity production and of course safe building materials. AFM products were specified throughout the store, including Safecoat Metalcoat primer, New Wallboard HPV, Eggshell and Cabinet and Trim Enamels, Polyureseal BP and AFM Naturals Clear Penetrating Oil. The project architects were: Hanna, Gabriel, Wells Architects.
