Presidio Thoreau Center

The Thoreau Center for Sustainable Development was one of the first buildings to be constructed/renovated after the closure of the Presidio Army Base in San Francisco, California. Safecoat paints were used throughout the project. It was important to the architects that only the most environmentally sensitive products be used in the construction, so that the project could serve as an example for modern material criteria and selection. Even though cost was a primary concern, they recognized that the use of Safecoat was warranted and did not add a significant amount to overall construction costs. Although the large painting contractor initially resisted use of this material, its painters commented on completion that it worked just fine, just like regular paint, and that the finish was certainly as high quality as any other water-based paint which could have been applied. Project architects were: Tanner Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects
